DuraSpace, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization which combined Fedora Commons and the DSpace Foundation, two of the largest providers of open source software for managing and providing access to digital content. DuraSpace aims to provide leadership and innovation in open source technologies for global communities who manage, preserve, and provide access to digital content. DuraSpace’s program to establish “solution communities” is intended to organize communities of interest around themes that are central to their mission. These solution communities are intended to involve technically aware managers and professionals to create the conditions for collaboration to emerge and to bring together resources to better inform and enable software development efforts. This presentation will describe the solution community theory and process and their use of social computing tools and approaches. We will discuss active community efforts, including Data Curation, Preservation and Archiving, Scholars Workbench and Small Archives.
