Katherine Klosek
Director of Information Policy
Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
In this briefing, ARL’s Director of Information Policy Katherine Klosek will give an overview of Section 230, a 1996 law that protects libraries and other internet service providers and users from liability for speech shared by third parties and content moderation practices. Klosek will highlight specific ways that libraries rely on the statute’s protections and give an overview of what to expect as the 118th Congress eyes changes to this fundamental law. The briefing will also cover Gonzalaz v. Google—the first US Supreme Court case on Section 230—and an amicus brief that the Association of Research Libraries joined in support of the law’s protections.
