Presenters from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Library Digital Library Program (DLP) will share outlines, examples, and experiences from its current program to increase and deepen student engagement with holdings from the UCLA Library’s Digital Collections. Collaborating with administrators and staff from technical and instructional support units outside of the library, the DLP has designed, developed, and piloted a three-unit modular template in the learning management system (Canvas) to facilitate the use of digital collections to support undergraduate course curricula. The three units in the template direct students through three pedagogical arenas in sequence: materials, methods, and products. This structure and sequence ensures adequate instructional attention to critical and proficiency-based learning goals, including information literacy, comparative analysis and annotation, and multimedia composition for public audiences. By developing this three-unit template in Canvas, the DLP meets faculty within the context of the way they develop, structure, and manage learning activities for their courses. With this pre-built scaffolding, the Digital Curriculum Program Coordinator (DCPC) and the faculty member can select content, develop assignments, and draw in expert collaborators from the range of special and unique collections across campus. We envision a range of adoption from self-service to paired teaching. Audience members will learn about the theory and practice of the outreach method and will be able to adapt this approach for their own collections.
